benches, picnic tables,
fences, stiles, bridges ... made for corporate bodies and private clients,
using timber sourced from local tree surgeons
I learnt to make
stiles, gates and fences whilst working for the National Trust, apprenticed to
a warden who had started working in forestry before the days of power tools. We
made all our structures from oak and chestnut trees felled in the local
woodland, worked in traditional ways.
I like to work
with oak which has a high tannin content, a natural preservative which means it
lasts many years outdoors without the use of harmful chemicals; most
countryside furniture these days is made from square sawn softwood which is
tanalised (treated with an arsenic compound).
The wood is
especially sawn to maintain the natural curves of the trees and sculpted to
give a really organic, natural look. I can offer a range of 'organic oak'
seating supplied ready-made to standard designs or I can make site-specific
work.
