family carving
One of the joys of spoon carving is that it is so portable. We take a box of tools whenever we go camping and many of our friends who we camp with are now addicted too! It is lovely to sit around a camp fire whittling with friends, then to use what you've made when stirring the camp cook pot.

kids carving
Ollie was 6 when he got the first knife of his own after a visit to the Frosts knife factory in Sweden, but the children were brought up using knives in the kitchen. We used fruit salad to teach them safe knife use; start with cutting bananas with a butter knife, then progress through harder fruit and sharper knives. After a few minor cuts they soon learn to respect a sharp edge!
kids carving
For quite a while the kids were more interested in the process of carving than making things. They would spend hours making a bit of wood into shavings or peeling a stick, just for the sheer pleasure of using a knife. We realised this was actually a good thing, a really useful way of learning techniques, so now we make people on our courses do the same thing!

Teenagers having knives is a difficult issues nowadays, but we are proud that JoJo and Ollie associate knives with tools rather than weapons and both put them to good use. Having started so early, we hope they will continue to develop their skills, but who knows, they might choose to become accountants instead!
Northumberland 2008
We had a week off without the kids so went camping in Northumberland ... and spent quite a while whittling in all sorts of places. If you're ever in a car park and find a random pile of wood shavings it probably means it has had a visit from the Woods!

Wales 2008
It didn't rain on us too much, but the camp site was so muddy it was impossible to go far without wellies. The site is just above Hells Mouth, one of Robin's favourite surfing spots. Whilst we sit and whittle he keeps an eye on the waves waiting for the surf to come up.

Cornwall 2007
Camping in a friends garden, using his magnificent wooden summerhouse as a base. The nearby woodlands provided a good supply of interesting spoon carving wood and we avoided the crowds by whittling on the veranda during the day and going to the beach in the late afternoon ... note the kitten teasing our dog!
