Today I had a meeting at the Peak National Park talking about potential commemorative projects having recently built a bridge for them. The idea is that some people would like to have something beautiful and functional as a memorial…a sculptural bridge, gate or seat perhaps. Much of what is available is suburban in character and I would like to be able to offer folk the chance to have something special and in keeping with the surroundings of the National Park.
The afternoon was spent cutting up another of the rings of my big beech tree, one ring made 40 bowl blanks which will keep me busy turning in the workshop for the rest of the week, as I cut the tree up I am deciding what design of bowl or plate it will be best to make from it and get a first feeling of how the wood will work. I always try to do this job on a dry day and today it was a perfect antidote to a morning in the office.
