This afternoon we popped down to a lovely local event, apple day at Shatton. It was a celebration of everything to do with apples. I was delighted to sample varieties that I had been considering planting and to hear how well they grow in the local microclimate which is pretty harsh.

The doors on the barn where the event were held were rather nice, note the way the hanging post continues up to form a the hinge, the lovely way the braces are morticed in and the chamfering on all the parts to reduce weight without loosing strength. Quite an effort to go to on a barn door.

There was lots of juicing going on.

 Ollie helping out.

 Demijohns full of juice.

The highlight of the day was the raffle, instead of paper tickets numbered leaves went into this most beautiful basket. It came apparently from Arizona where the owners father stayed in the 1950s and was thought to be Navajo though after a bit of web searching I am wondering if it may be Apache. If any of my blog readers know about Native American baskets I would love to know more, it was the most exquisite workmanship.
