Barnaby Carder aka “Barn the spoon” is still with us and so over the weekend we played in the workshop.
First we forged hook tools then ground hardened and tempered them.
Then Barn turned a rather nice beech bowl, this is starting the outside.
Hollowing the inside.
Nearly finished, just undercutting the core, the most difficult part.
And cleaning up the scar where the core breaks out.
I normally dry my bowls for 6-8 weeks then oil them before use but Barn was so pleased he took his straight home and had lunch out of it.

Hi RobinCan you reccomend a source for the steel you use for making turning tools please?
Are your mandrills commercially available?
Hi Jules and Brad,I try to answer technical bowlturning questions on this forum http://www.bodgers.org.uk/bb/phpBB2/index.phpThere is lots of information already on there. I buy my steel from various stockholders in Sheffield though for several years I used car springs.I make my mandrels and there is info on the forum both for the long lasting professional variety and simple easy turn 10 or so bowls variety.
