For us traditional crafts people it is always difficult when it comes to applying for any grant, award scheme or whatever. The simple fact is innovative cutting edge work gets all the support, in the words of Kim Evans past director of the Arts Council…

“You are correct in your analysis of support for innovative craft
practice; this is where nationally funded organisations have focused
their attention over the past twenty five years or so. Indeed this has
been the case with the visual arts as a whole where the innovative has
been prioritised over the traditional,”
So we traditional craft people have to dress our work up and try to pretend it is somehow groundbreaking and new in order to access any support network, it doesn’t come easily but help is at hand with a new website “the arty bollocks generator“.

Of course the whole system is up the spout and needs changing. Sir Mark Jones director of the V&A and patron of the Heritage Crafts Association says that the word “innovative” is actually meaningless and what we should be celebrating is excellence. Work can be new and excellent or traditional and excellent, you can also get poor work that is innovative and poor work that is traditional. Lets cut the bollocks and celebrate excellence.
